Early civilizations depended on nearby water sources for survival. Ancient Egyptians relied heavily on the Nile and developed clay pipes to transport water, later using copper. The Romans expanded on this technology with massive aqueducts that carried water into cities and even individual homes. They also developed early sewage systems using hollowed out elm logs.

A Royal Step Backwards

Surprisingly, plumbing technology declined in some places over time. In 18th-century France, even the royal courts lacked modern indoor plumbing. Water was difficult to transport to inland palaces, while waste disposal was extremely limited. Perfume was commonly used to mask unpleasant odours.
